Performance of the Month – April 2018

Walton Casuals have won the Performance of the Month award for April after the first of two 5–2 victories against high-flying Cray Wanderers.

While the Stags recently put five past Cray in the Bostik South Play-Off Semi-Final, the award was given for the game that ultimately put the Casuals back into play-off contention.

A blip early in the month and defeat to Thamesmead Town initially saw Walton lose control of their place in the play-offs, and Anthony Gale’s side faced the daunting task of beating Cray Wanderers to have any chance of finishing in the top six.

Michael Freiter’s goal after just three minutes looked to have made the task even harder, but end-to-end football saw Josh Kelly equalise just one minute later. Lea Dawson returned the lead to the visitors on 12 minutes, before Kelly found the net with his second and third shots of the game on 12 and 14 minutes.

Youssef Bamba added Walton’s fourth three minutes later, before the game calmed down and the Stags hoped to keep hold of their lead for three crucial points.

Kelly then rounded off the scoring four minutes from time, with the 19-year-old becoming the club’s first ever player to score four goals in a single Isthmian League match.

Congratulations to all on a much-deserved award!
