The drama of the Velocity Trophy continues, and the Casuals have now been ruled out of the competition after fielding an ineligible player.
The Stags first welcomed Horsham to the Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub for the Second Round tie, and lost 3-1 in a Halloween thriller. It later emerged the Hornets had played an ineligible player, as the league had not received official confirmation from parent club Lewes that George Landais could play in the competition.
Three weeks later, goals from Sean McCormack, Daryl Coleman and Lartey Sarpong secured a comfortable 3-0 victory in a replay at the Sports Hub. The Casuals looked to have booked their place in the Third Round and a trip to Bostik Premier high-flyers Dulwich Hamlet – scheduled for two weeks time.
However, it has since emerged that the Casuals had fielded an ineligible player in Dominic Ogun. He had featured for Chipstead in their 5-0 victory against Leatherhead in the First Round. Rule 10.2 of the Isthmian League Cup states: “A player shall not play for more than one club in the competition in the same season.”
Rather than a third fixture between the two clubs, it has been decided that Horsham will not be reinstated and Dulwich Hamlet have been given a bye to the next round.
