Lartey Sarpong’s late effort edged a seven-goal thriller as the Stags continued their perfect start to the season against ten-men Faversham Town.
Despite the Casuals looking strong from the off, it was Liam King who struck first for the visitors with a deadly finish from the edge of the box after 12 minutes.
Roscoe Dsane saw an effort cleared off the line immediately after, but captain Daryl Coleman ensured the game was levelled with a blistering free-kick from 25 yards just eight minutes later.
A well-worked corner almost handed the hosts a lead, before Faversham were reduced to 10 men for an hour. Renford Tenyue saw red for palming the ball off the line, and Dsane coolly slotted past Simon Overland from 12 yards.
Joe Hicks’ first goal of the season after his arrival from Hampton & Richmond before the break looked to seal three points after a low-driven strike, although it wasn’t plain sailing for Walton.
After a defensive start to the second half, Faversham were handed a lifeline in the 73rd minute with Daryl Coleman booked for a handball in the box. Sam Bewick sent Denzel Gerrar the wrong way from the spot and handed his side a lifeline.
And just six minutes later, a bizarre header from Jordan Casey caught Gerrar off his life and looped into the net to the amazement of the goalkeeper.
The comeback was short-lived though, and a rush from kick-off allowed Lartey Sarpong to beat the goalkeeper from 10 yards just 40 seconds later to relieve the crowd.
Substitute Evander Lopes caused the Faversham defence several problems in the final minutes, and almost created a fifth when Josh Kelly connected with the woodwork.
Victory sent the Stags to the top of the table with maximum points after three games, and now the only team with a 100% record.
Walton Casuals now host Molesey for the second time in two weeks in a Bank Holiday fixture on Monday 28 August.
