A late penalty from Youssef Bamba ensured Walton Casuals retained the bragging rights with their third win of the season against Molesey.

His 78th-minute spot-kick came after substitute Lartey Sarpong opened the scoring and Ryan David issued a response eight minutes later.

After two meetings in August – with the Casuals emerging as 3-1 and 2-1 victors – their first at the Elmbridge Sports Hub proved to be an even encounter throughout.

Bamba looked to cause trouble for full-back David early on, but a miskick from Joe Hicks almost put the visitors through in the opening stages. The first of a number of important saves from Denzel Gerrar kept his side in the game, before launching a counter-attack that almost put Tyrell Richardson-Brown through on goal.

A poor effort from Molesey’s Ronald Sobowale soon flew over the bar to the relief of the home supporters, although he forced an impressive save from Gerrar shortly before the break. His strike from 10 yards was parried out by the goalkeeper before the rebounded effort from Ross Chalke rattled the crossbar.

Sonny Black – who picked up a knock in the first minute – was forced off just before the break, although his replacement made an immediate impact for the Casuals.

Lartey Sarpong had been on the pitch a matter of minutes when he broke the deadlock, finding Bamba’s low-driven cross before beating Liam Allen from just inside the box.

He almost had a second soon after, with Alex Kelly making a bursting run through the Moles’ midfield and defence before finding Sarpong – who connected with the post from 20 yards out.

Molesey made sure to grab their equaliser before the Stags could inflict further damage, and the goal came from the unlikeliest of sources. A low cross found the path of Ryan David at the back post, who grabbed his first goal for the club in over 50 appearances.

Reis Stanislaus should have put the visitors in the lead but was unable to test the goalkeeper with his shot, before Tyrell Richardson-Brown had a chance up the other end after turning Ashby Charles at pace.

A fantastic combination of defending from Max Hustwick and Joe Hicks then prevented a strike from Sobowale yards from goal, and Allen stood strong when Richardson-Brown struck a powerful effort from the edge of the box.

Efforts from Sean McCormack, Bamba and substitute Josh Kelly – marking his return from injury after a month out – all came close for the Stags, and the hosts dominated the final 20 minutes while searching for the winner.

The goal eventually came courtesy of Josh Kelly and Bamba, with the striker beating the offside trap and being pulled down around the neck by ex-Walton defender Taylor Roles.

Bamba stepped up for the club’s fourth penalty in three games and put his weekend woes behind him to send Allen the wrong way.

Three late chances from Moles substitutes Tayo Ayebola and Anthony Kozakis should have been taken better to earn a draw, but Walton held out to climb to fourth place and extend their winning streak to five.
