Recap

Three strikes from the Maidenhead United loanees ensured the first victory at the Elmbridge Xcel Sports Hub against East Grinstead Town.

Josh Kelly opened the scoring with an effort from 30 yards out, before Sean McCormack added one in each half with two low-driven shots.

Daryl Coleman returned to the squad to lead the Stags out at their new home for the first time, against a side yet to taste victory in the Bostik South Division.

The trickery of Jack Battie resulted in an early injury for the visitors, and the Wasps struggled to test Denzel Gerrar with their early chances.

Efforts from Luke Holness and Battie came close with keeper Oshane Brown looking nervous, but Kelly was able open the scoring with his long-range strike looping over the shot stopper.

And his Maidenhead United counterpart was able to double the lead just seven minutes – Harry Mills doing well to find the winger before cutting in on a defender and drilling his strike into the bottom corner out of the reach of Brown.

Town’s Marcus Elliott was unable to hit the target when given an open goal, and the defensive duo of Max Hustwick and Joe Hicks ensured chances were few for the visitors.

With Battie taking the number ten shirt for the first time this season, his dribbling resulted in another defender pulling up through injury and being forced into a second change before the break.

A back heeled pass from McCormack came close to creating a third prior to half-time, but Kelly was unable to add to his personal tally. A corner from Battie almost curled in at the back post, but the Stags went into the break two goals up.

An overhead kick from Kelly suggested an ambitious start to the second half for the hosts, who returned to top spot in the league.

But it was East Grinstead who piled on the pressure after a half-time team-talk. Gerrar was forced into several saves to keep his clean sheet intact, and was even forced into dribbling past two defenders after a mistake from his defence.

However, McCormack added his second of the evening midway through the second half. Brown did well to parry an initial effort, but couldn’t prevent the youngster following up for the coolly finished rebound.

The three-goal cushion looked to deflate Matt Longhurst’s side, and the Casuals were comfortable in possession for the remainder of the game.
