Recap

An early goal in each half allowed Walton Casuals to see off a resilient Molesey and end the month with a perfect record.

Luke Holness’ long-range strike and an own goal from Charles Ashby handed the Stags a two-goal advantage, but Ronald Sobowale scared the hosts as the Moles piled on the pressure in the second half.

Walton were without top scorers Josh Kelly and Roscoe D’Sane, meaning Evander Lopes and Michael Phillip-Ogbuogu were given starts, while Molesey had both Olu Akinsanya and Dre Grobler suspended.

Holness, who opened the scoring in the 1st minute when the two sides met nine days ago, showed the visitors weren’t lacking firepower though – beating Liam Allen with an identical strike in the first attack of the game.

Molesey struggled to create a threat in the final third for much of the first half, although a spell of pressure from Sobowale almost forced Denzel Gerrar into a mistake soon after. The goalkeeper covered well to make a clearance from Molesey’s best chance of the half.

After two red cards in the recent FA Cup meeting, a fiery local derby would have been much anticipated by supporters and it didn’t take long for the rash challenges to come into play.

Evander Lopes found himself on the end of a horrific challenge from Antonio Simeone, which resulted in Sean McCormack rattling the crossbar after a clever free-kick, before Craig Lewington had a few opportunities to grab an equaliser.

A lengthy pause in play helped calm emotions, with Max Fitzgerald taking a kick to the head after a brave challenge. Sobowale came close once more for the Moles with a glancing header into the hands of Gerrar, before Dujon Desagurante made an excellent block to prevent the striker – who is preparing for a trial with Nottingham Forest – from having another opportunity.

Walton looked sharp after the restart once again, and this time required just two minutes before doubling their lead. An unfortunate back pass from full-back Ashby Charles evaded the path of Liam Allen before creeping in at the back post.

Molesey stepped up the pressure in a desperate attempt to claw a point, and looked positive in their play. Josh Andrew and Ashley Lodge looked to cause problems out wide, and they finally broke their deadlock shortly before the hour mark in a moment of confusion.

A quick free-kick from Lewington was well-finished by Sobowale, but much to the disapproval of the Casuals players who were told to wait for a whistle that never blew. Despite objections, Molesey were awarded the goal and battled ferociously for an equaliser.

Both sides came close in the final stages of the match, although the hot weather and recovery from a game just 48 hours prior took its toll on both teams with the Casuals keeping out the best efforts of the hosts.

The two teams now have a longer rest prior to Saturday’s fixtures, when the Stags travel to Herne Bay in the FA Cup First Qualifying Round.
